Uh oh. It looks like this puzzle doesn't have any content in it; only a disclaimer that we should look at the Library. But a quick look at the Library reveals that the "search" button has the same emoji as the title of this puzzle. This suggests that the puzzle is probably hidden in the Library's search function somehow!

If we navigate to the third floor of the library (or, if we haven't used the search function before, if we simply open the page) and search for any string, we might notice two things: firstly, that the highlighted portion of the page which includes the text we searched for has extra information appended to it; and secondly, that the rest of these pages don't seem to be fully random. In fact, each search result in the list includes the same information each time.

The search query text can overlap with the included information, so if it's too long, it'll probably overwrite most of the data; best to keep the query short (or keep requesting search results until the whole puzzle is visible). There are seven search results that come up for each query, each of which corresponds to a minipuzzle.

This puzzle seems to consist of a long list of things, animals, and people, with a single space between each item. Additionally, they seem to be divided into six different sets of things, with each set of things separated by a double-space instead of a single-space.

Because there are 26 items in each set, we can associate each item in each set with a letter of the alphabet!

Additionally, during this process, we might spot some familiar names... that's because these sets are actually Where's Waldo scenes, where each scene includes one Where's Waldo character, as well as their associated item. (It might help, though it's not strictly necessary, to realize that each of the sets correspond to the first six Where's Waldo scenes in order.)

Finally, looking at the letters that each of the people and items are associated with in each of the scenes:

This puzzle consists of a set of nine cryptic clues, which are preceded by the numbers 1-9 and followed by indices. Solving the clues gives a set of words that are synonyms for various named Google products—ordering these products by clue number and indexing gives the answer JOHN MAYER.

This puzzle consists of two columns of names, but the first names don't appear to match the last names. In fact, all of the people featured in the left-hand column have names made up of two "first" names—each of their last names is the first name of one of the people in the right-hand column. Ordering by the left column (the right is sorted alphabetically) and indexing the missing "first" name yields the cluephrase QUEEN OF SCOTS, which we combine with (six four) and the puzzle theming to find the answer MARY STUART.

As clued by the flavortext, this puzzle is about working titles. Each of the clues produces the working title of a movie, which matches the given enumeration; solvers should then index into the movie's final title (always the primary title listed on Wikipedia, despite some weird edge cases where THE LORD OF THE RINGS: gets used but STAR WARS: EPISODE VI - does not). This yields the cluephrase BBC NEWSBRIEF—NEWSBRIEF is itself the working title of a failed BBC news magazine codenamed PROJECT PHOENIX.

The puzzle consists of a wordsearch-like grid of letters and a set of enumerations. There are a few words that can be spotted in the grid: NAVIGATOR, KNIFE, and SCIENCE, for instance. But these don't seem to fit the blanks on their own.

The trick is that each of the entries are actually split into two separate parts, with one letter repeated at the end of the first half and at the start of the second half. These two parts are then hidden in the wordsearch separately. To put it another way, one of the letters in each of the entries is a 'wormhole', which 'teleports' the rest of the entry somewhere else in the grid. Each of the entries are also associated with wormholes or space-time travel in some fashion.

The repeated letters spell the answer to this minipuzzle, SPACEBALLS.

This is the only subpuzzle whose content changes with each search. By collecting enough versions of the page text (to ensure the search query and the puzzle flavortext aren't covering the information), and searching the text using four different versions of the bottom-row regex (based on the flavortext, taking "one space", or \s, at a time), we get the cluephrase FINAL FRONTIER TV SHOW, or STAR TREK.

The content of this puzzle may be difficult to locate at first, since much of it initially appears to be gibberish. There are some recognizable words, however, and a few names—all of which have some relation to the text on Magic: the Gathering cards. In general, the strings of identifying information always include a mana cost (a number plus some potential "gibberish" at the beginning), plus some combination of power/toughness, rarity, type, keywords, artist, and 3-letter set code. (A translation into Scryfall search terms has been included in the table below.)

Each string uniquely identifies a single card, each of which has a second card (potentially itself) that contains the text "Search your library for a [blank] named [original card name]". Reading off the first letters of the "Search your library" cards yields the answer, THE SUNKEN RUIN.

The Final Step

The answers to each of the minipuzzles are associated with some phrase starting with "search for". For example, the answer AMERICAN IDOL is associated with the phrase "the search for a superstar". Submitting a search query for the word or phrase that follows "search for" (i.e. following the phrase's instruction) will yield search results for pages that are just a bigram repeated over and over.

Ordering these bigrams in the order of their answer's search result number yields the answer, and something that would be pretty good at searching: TRAINED HUSKIES.

Author’s Notes

Thomas: This puzzle was ideated when I remarked (well, repeatedly brought up) that we had Library-related puzzles in floors one and two, but no Library puzzles in floor three at all. This presented a pacing issue: if the last time that solvers had to interact with the Library was halfway through floor two, they would spend over half the hunt completely ignoring our interesting hunt gimmick and all of the hard work that had gone into it!

The solution, then, was to create a bunch more hard work for everyone involved. (Oops. Sorry.) Over some long-forgotten Shardhunt meeting we talked over ways that a Library puzzle could work and designed the meta; then it was off to the races.

I'd like to thank my co-author, Addie, for taking my vague hand-gesturing and doing the legwork to make it happen (including all of the site tech and five of the minipuzzles).

Adeline: When we were iterating on the early drafts of this puzzle, the concept of a puzzle page containing only the "This puzzle requires use of the Library" disclaimer and nothing else was simply too good to pass up. As an added bonus, it helped us justify the multiple results on the Library search page!

weve been working on these titles: This puzzle went through a few iterations, especially while trying to pick the right balance of obvious and easy-to-clue working titles. It was with much disappointment that I had to cut THE INTIMIDATION GAME (Batman Begins) and TORCHWOOD (Doctor Who) for the unfortunate truth that there are existing movies/shows that share those exact names (in the case of Torchwood, quite intentionally). I also considered, briefly, attempting to clue TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT CLUELESS ROAD TRIPS WHEN I HARDLY CAN'T WAIT TO BE KISSED (Not Another Teen Movie), before deciding it would probably be a little bit too hard.

search your library: When I stumbled upon the idea of the "search your library" mechanic, I made a pitch for it as the minimeta for this puzzle. It's probably better that this pitch failed, as the actual minimeta is much more integrated into the Library itself, but I'm glad I got to recycle the idea as a feeder.
